Cruise Holidays and taking Infants

Article by Alicia Chewe

Cruising today has improved in many ways over the way it was years ago. One improvement is the concessions that have been made for families who want to bring their babies and toddlers.

In the past, the design of the cabins was not conducive to a baby or a small child and the little ones were not allowed in the pool and play areas. Today cruise lines make it easy to bring along baby.

The more people that enjoy cruising as their family vacation, the more accommodating the big cruise lines are becoming. Bringing your infant along is easy to do if you use good planning and find out what each ship has aboard for your baby before you book. Here are some tips for planning a cruise with your baby.

1. Check the cruise lines policies for those that are baby-friendly. Some do not want babies at all but most are happy for you to bring the little one. There may be age limits of three months, six months, or one year. Whatever the cruise line, often the newer ships are the ones with more facilities for children and babies.

2. When it comes to cabins, Carnival and Disney probably have the largest, more family-friendly cabins that are more likely to have room for a crib. A stateroom rather than a regular cabin is more spacious and having a crib inside shouldn’t make things too cramped.

3. You should also check with each cruise line you are considering about babysitting services. After all, most parents would like to get away and relax for a while and some shore excursions are not appropriate for children of that age. Some have in-cabin sitters available and others have group baby-sitting. Be sure that there service covers infants and find out the price.

4. Once you have picked your cruise and ship, check on the availability of cribs. Not all ships can provide cribs, but many do. Be sure to request it well ahead of time. Many ships also offer strollers, but they are usually meant for use on the sand and not for narrow ship hallways. So bringing a small, collapsible stroller is a good idea.

5. While some cruise lines will make baby food, you would be smart to bring a supply of your baby’s food as well as diapers, which cannot always be found on board.

Yes, it may take a little extra planning when cruising with babies, but it’s worth it to forego the worry of leaving him behind and knowing that he will be well taken care of while on the cruise. Some cruise lines besides Carnival and Disney that cater to younger children include, Royal Caribbean, Cunard, and Norwegian Cruise Lines.

Perfect Caribbean Cruise Holidays

Article by Daryl Serrano

Getting on a Caribbean cruise has been a popular trend among travelers from around the world. The fun part during a Caribbean holidays are the accommodation, food, and entertainment that all can be found in one place. When going on a cruise, guests will enjoy the exciting ports and places and meeting acquaintances on board.

If you are running away from the hassle and bustle of your city life, Caribbean holidays is the answer for your concerns. Here are a few tips in finding the perfect Caribbean cruise for you and your family.

1. Cost and Discounts: Internet is a great source of great cruise vacations and the Caribbean is one of the most popular among them. This means that there are many cruise lines that would offer the most competitive prices but still the grandest services. Take time to look around and find the best Caribbean cruise deals and activities that will cater to your interests and desires.

2. Cruise Offers: Learn about the activities that cruise lines offer on board. If you would be spending long days on the boat, make sure that there are a lot of amenities available to make the most of your time. For those who love sights and photography, you might not need to book a luxury liner since you will be spending most of the time on deck.

3. Port and Stops: Find out what the ports and destinations are. This will help you with the kind and amount of clothing you need to pack for your Caribbean holidays. There are some people who are adventurous enough to spend time shopping, trekking, eating, and sightseeing at ports, while others would prefer to avoid tourists and stay in the comforts of the boat. To make the most out of your holidays, decide and list down the things that you would like to do while on the trip.

4. Companions: Determine the cruise lines that would suit the interests of your companions. If you are going on a cruise with children or teenagers, find out the cruise lines that offer amenities for them. If you plan to go on a romantic cruise, search for more exclusive cruise lines that have key activities that you and you loved one will enjoy doing together.

5. Time: It is best to book for Caribbean holidays in advance to ensure you of the best deals and enough time to prepare. The months of April and May are the smoothest sailing months. Since the Caribbean has hurricanes, the months of June to November should be avoided because general forecasts declare these months would most likely have hurricanes.

Cape Town Holidays with Children

Article by Rachel Hill

It can be difficult to plan a holiday for the whole family, especially when travelling with young children. They can be demanding at the best of times – but as we all know, no holiday would be complete without the entire family there to enjoy it. So what is on offer for children during your Cape Town holidays? There are plenty of child-friendly attractions and activities to visit and take part in while you visit Cape Town – and who knows? Perhaps some of the adults in your group may just find themselves having a little bit of fun as well. Here are a few top choices for children on holiday in Cape Town.

Fathers and Children

Cape Town holidays are a great chance for fathers and kids to really bond and have fun together with some of the exciting activities on offer. Cool Runnings Toboggan Park provides plenty of thrills as you thunder around the half-pipe in a toboggan, reaching speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour. For a more relaxed experience, The Giraffe House is a wildlife centre which offers talks and exhibits, and even interactive reptile and snake shows! There are play areas, picnic areas, and even a bike track for children under 10.

Summer Holiday Fun

For those interested in the sciences, a perfect activity for making the most of the exotic location is the Summer Science Splash, if your Cape Town holidays fall in the summer. It is edu-tainment at its best, with topics ranging from sharks to penguins, and even the reason why starfish have five arms! If a more energetic experience is needed, heading up to Table Mountain at sunset is a great way to let of some steam and be able to explore the mountain at any pace.

Out of the Ordinary

If you and your family are overheating in the sun during your Cape Town holidays, it might make a nice change to cool off by going ice-skating at the V&A Waterfront; with real ice-skating at the water’s edge housed inside a giant inflatable cube. If ice-skating isn’t enough of an experience in South Africa, the V&A waterfront is also home to the Jolly Roger Pirate Boat, offering pirate shows, treasure hunts, face-painting, and all sorts of other pirate-themed activities – along with an hour’s cruise in the harbour of Cape Town. The waterfront is full of places to buy an ice-cream or two as an after-dinner treat, and a beautiful place to sit down and simply watch as life in Cape Town goes by.

Cruise Holidays With Gimicks

Article by Ian Gilder Jetline Cruise

Throughout the last few years, cruise holidays have grown in popularity and an increasing number of new build ships have been launched by many of the cruise lines in order to not only satisfy this growth but to attempt to ensure its’ ongoing growth. As newer ‘mega’ liners or ‘super’ vessels with more and more innovative and, at times, unbelievable facilities on board are launched, with cruise companies spending millions of pounds on their ‘hardware’, it’s interesting to consider whether or not they are pure genius, or simply gimmicks that, once the novelty has worn off, aren’t really making more people cruise than would have done anyway.

Examples of these innovative facilities which have been added on cruise ships include, ‘Flowrider’, Royal Caribbean’s onboard surf park. And with Royal Caribbean International it doesn’t stop there. They are also responsible for, amongst other things, rock climbing walls scaling their ships’ funnels, ice skating rinks at sea, zip wires along their Royal Promenades, old-fashioned Carousels for the children (and big kids in all of us!!), as well as a whole host of other unbelievable facilities.

And Royal Caribbean aren’t alone – with other cruise lines also competing such as Celebrity Cruises and their real grass on the top deck, P&O Cruises and their Scaletrex tracks and Norwegian Cruise Lines and their ten pin bowling alley to name but a few.

Some of these facilities are pure genius it must be said, and generally the activities which have been designed to keep children completely entertained whilst on board. Water parks, discos, slides and amusement arcades are just a handful of the options available to keep youngsters happy. And in this context, these ‘gimmicks’ must be a good thing as happy children equals happy parents and therefore a great holiday for everyone.

Taking this into account, the introduction of some of these kid-friendly ‘gimmicks’ must have assisted in the growth of cruise holidays within the family market and similarly, the ‘wild and wacky’ ideas which British holiday makers will have seen on television adverts, in newspapers and magazines and on direct mail will most definitely have helped grow the market as they will have helped to dispel some of the staid and old fashioned myths of cruise holidays only being suitable for the ‘over fed, newly wed and nearly dead’!

Because these more ‘out there’ facilities have aided marketers within the cruise lines to generate more inspirational and aspirational sales messages, they must have helped in some way to grow the cruise market. And in fact, research has shown that advertising in recent years has changed many people’s perceptions of cruise holidays although there is still some way to go.

However, the reality on board is that for many travellers, once they have queued for some time to trial the facilities, and had the experience once, it’s unlikely that for example, a zip wire, or grass on the top deck would actually encourage repeat bookings. Then it is in the hands of the ‘complete’ experience, the food, staff, destinations, accommodation and value for money being some of the key reasons guests would go on to make repeat bookings.

In conclusion, new facilities on cruise ships have most definitely helped assist the growth in popularity of cruises, but whether or not they help repeat business is still debatable. And where now for the next raft of mega ships? It will be interesting to see what the cruise line designers come up with next!!!

Holidays On Cruise Ship: Lots To Do For All Walks Of Life

Article by Claire Collins

Evening music, cabaret and comedy shows, all you can eat buffets, spas and sports are just some of the many, many things like a cruise ship offers. With entertainment on offer all day, and all night, there is constantly something available for all types of people, it doesn’t matter whether you’re holidaying in a family, as a couple, on your own or with friends.

Fitness is important, and although you’re on a vacation, if you want to keep up with your regime, check out the fitness centre. For something a little more adventurous, and perfect for the teens and young people are the popular climbing walls. Everyone is also welcome to join in on the fun games such as volleyball matches, but if you get tired you are free to drop out and head back to your room or the pool whenever you need a break.

For food lovers, take advantage of all the restaurants and different meals offered onboard. There are a number of restaurants to choose from, you can have romantic and quiet dinner away from kids, or alternatively if you have children and you require a fun place to eat where you don’t have to worry about exotic food or being loud, cruises cater to all these different needs. With breakfast, lunch and dinner provided, as well as snacks and afternoon tea, you won’t get hungry or have to worry about making sure everyone in the family is fed or likes the food as there is always great variation. There are also lots of all inclusive cruise packages on offer, which are an option worth considering as it makes it easy once you’re onboard the liner as you won’t have to worry about paying for anything, and can make the most of all the facilities on offer.

If you’re on holiday as a family, perhaps you might fancy relaxing and treating yourself while your kids are off participating in the many arts or sporting activities, you could head off to the spa. The luxurious spa instantly creates a relaxing afternoon with anything from a massage and facial, to soaking in the whirlpools and sweating toxins out in the saunas and steam rooms. Meanwhile, if your teenagers become restless or tired, as well as all the outdoor activities, there are areas to play cards, surf the net and compete in video games for some time out of the sun.

If you fancy dancing to the latest music, or participating in sports alongside fellow enthusiasts, cruise ship holidays are great places to meet people of similar interests. Some cruises are themed and so attract passengers with similar interests and beliefs. So if you want to party all night with people who love county music or dancing to 70s hits, a cruise could be the holiday for you. Obviously music and parties aren’t the only things cruises offer, you can enjoy all types of experiences with others – sports, food, shows and travelling to new and exciting places.

Holidays on Cruise Ships with Kids

Article by Paul Banas

If you’re like most couples with young kids, nothing sounds worse than being cooped up with a boatload of geriatrics and your little kids. While the image of cruising is changing, it’s still hard to get over this preconception. In reality, a cruise might be a perfect vacation for you and your family.

Here are some key things to think about when planning a cruise adventure.

1. Number one is cost and relaxation. While a cruise with a baby in a small cabin might work, packing 2 older kids in with mom and dad might spoil the relaxation of a cruise. Think of the cost/benefit trade-offs when planning and deciding to take a cruise. For example: No sex for a week, 8PM bedtimes and living in a perpetual mess you have to step over, may not seem like a vacation.

2. Most cruise lines have excellent and FREE child-care programs that will take care of kids 3 or older (2 or older for potty-trained kids on Carnival and Norwegian), which makes even thinking of 4 to a cabin imaginable. Many kids end up preferring childcare to being with mom and dad and it gives parents total flexibility in planning excursions and alone time. However, kids must be potty trained and may even be excluded if they violate “3 strikes” rules.

Additionally, you’ll find out very quickly if your child does not like the childcare concept. On a recent cruise to Alaska, our five year old couldn’t stay away from her new pals, while the couple we were traveling with could not convince their son to try it more than once.

3. Cruise ship pools do not allow swimming diapers due to different public health rules, so no babies in the pool.

4. Talk to cruise staff about the appropriateness of excursions for your kids. While cruises always try to have you reserve excursions up front, most, if not all, do not get completely booked until the days before they take place, so you can almost always book on the ship after talking to staff with direct experience.

Make sure to ask whether the excursion might be scary for little kids, whether rest rooms are available, and importantly if there’s a chance dad might have to carry a four-year-old up 450 steps.

5. Bring a group. Cruising is really a perfect way to travel with extended family or another couple or two with kids. The size of the ship and the number of excursions allow for plenty of separation, while providing lots of opportunities for friends and family to re-unite at dinners or events.

Long travel gives dads the added concern of keeping kids from getting bored on the journey. There are many more ways to do this than the good old portable DVD player. For other travel activities with kids, there are some good ideas you can keep at the back of your mind when the “how much longer?” questions start coming fast and furious.
